Ear Surgery/Otoplasty for Children and Adults – Bucio Surgicenter in Tijuana
Dr Francisco Bucio has performed ear surgery, or otoplasty, on several patients at his Tijuana practice. Otoplasty is designed to set protruding ears closer to the head, reduce the size of large ears, or improve stretched earlobes. Dr. Bucio can also build new ears for those who were born without them or lost them through injury.
Otoplasty is primarily performed on children between the ages of five and fourteen, considering kids with large or protruding ears often are embarrassed and have a lower self esteem. However, otoplasty can be performed on adults as well with few or no additional risks.
Parents should discuss otoplasty with their child first to determine if he or she is ready for the change. Children that are ridiculed by their peers or have lower self confidence due to large or protruding ears are more likely to be in favor of otoplasty, are more cooperative throughout the process, and are generally satisfied with the outcome.
Before the surgery, Dr. Bucio will evaluate the patient’s situation and determine the most effective technique to use. The otoplasty procedure, performed at Dr. Bucio’s Tijuana clinic, will usually take between two and three hours to complete. The patient will be under a local anesthesia causing him or her to be awake, but lightly sedated and unable to feel pain.
During otoplasty, Dr. Bucio begins by making an incision behind the ear to expose the cartilage. Next, he bends or reshapes the cartilage to the desired position. Non-removable stitches are normally used to maintain the new position and shape of the ear.
After otoplasty, the patient will have to wear a bandage around his or her head for the first week, so the ears have time to heal.
Patients can return to normal activities, such as going to school, between five and seven days after surgery. However, any bending of the ear should be avoided for the first month.
Otoplasty is performed at Dr. Bucio’s Tijuana clinic, where strict security measures are enforced to ensure a patient’s safety and comfort.
