Tattoo Removal

In the past, the only ways to remove unwanted tattoos were cutting, sanding, or freezing them off. These procedures were very painful and left permanent scars.

Today, tattoos can be removed with laser technology, a safer and less painful technique which rarely leaves scars.

Dr. Francisco Bucio uses the ND: Yag QS laser, the newest system in the class of tattoo-removing lasers, which is significantly advanced in removing blue, black, and red inks.

The short pulses of intense laser light break up the ink fragments of the tattoo without harming the skin. Once the particles of ink are broken up, they are absorbed by the body and disappear.

Different frequencies of light are used to break up different colors of ink. Blue and black are the easiest colors to remove, while yellow and green are the most difficult.

Side effects are rare and may include hyper-pigmentation (darkening of the treated area), hypo-pigmentation (lightening of the treated area), and infection of the treatment site.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it painful?

Laser tattoo removal is uncomfortable, but not as painful as getting a tattoo. The doctor can put a pain relieving cream on the area to be treated about twenty minutes prior to treatment, but many patients say they do not need a pain reliever. Patients may also take Tylenol (acetaminophen) prior to the laser treatment, but not aspirin or NSAIDs (such as ibuprofen) as these medications may cause extra bleeding or bruising.

How many treatments are necessary?

The number of treatments depends on the size and location of the tattoo, as well as the experience of the artist who made it. A tattoo from a well-trained, experienced professional is easier to remove because the ink is placed evenly and at the proper depth beneath the skin.

Each laser removal treatment should last ten to twenty minutes, and treatments should be performed two to three weeks apart in order to make sure all of the ink that was broken down during previous treatments has been absorbed into the skin.

Permanent Hair Removal

Permanent hair removal is the best alternative to daily shaving and monthly waxing and plucking of unwanted hair. Laser hair removal is a safer, less painful alternative to electrolysis.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does it work?

The laser light sends a pulse of concentrated energy through the pigment of the hair into the follicle. The concentrated energy permanently damages the hair follicle, making it unable to produce more hair.

Who is a good candidate?

Because the laser energy travels through the pigment, the best candidate is one who has more pigment in their hair (darker hair), and less pigment in their skin (lighter skin). It is also beneficial if the hair being removed is thick rather than fine.

The ideal candidate is one who is willing to commit the time to go through with several visits, if necessary.

What results can I expect?

The hairs in the treated area should not grow back after the procedure. Because only one-third of your hair follicles are producing hair at any given moment (the other follicles are temporarily dormant), laser hair removal may take more than one treatment to complete. Depending on the size and location of the targeted area, treatments may last five to fifteen minutes and are spaced a few weeks apart in order to give the dormant hairs time to start growing.

What areas can be treated?

It is possible to remove hair from anywhere on the body, though areas with thicker and darker hairs are the easiest to treat. Also, some areas of the skin are more sensitive than others, which will not necessarily affect the hair removal process, but may influence how uncomfortable the procedure will be.

How does it feel?

The procedure itself can be uncomfortable, but topical anesthetics may be used to decrease discomfort. Most patients do not require pain medication and describe the feeling as being similar to getting snapped with a rubber band.

After the procedure, some swelling and redness around the hair follicles is usually a sign that the procedure was successful. The treated area may have the sensation of a mild sunburn for about twenty-four hours.

IPL (intense pulsed light) has provided a remarkable new technology for ridding the face of discolorations, age spots, sun damage, and rosacea with no “downtime” for recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can a FotoFacial™ do for my skin?

An IPL FotoFacial™ can reduce or diminish age spots, birth marks, sun damage, rosacea, and psoriasis.

What can I expect?

Immediately following the procedure, your skin may be red and/or swollen, and any dark spots may appear darker. After a couple of hours to a couple of days, you will notice a dramatic improvement in the appearance of your skin.

How does the FotoFacial™ work?

The light emitted by the IPL is absorbed in the hemoglobin (red blood cells) and melanin (skin pigment) in the skin without damaging the surrounding areas. The light is transformed into heat, and breaks up the hemoglobin and melanin which are then absorbed into the body. This reduces or eliminates birthmarks, age spots, sun damage, rosacea, and much more.

How does the treatment feel?

During the treatment, most patients report a tingling sensation. After treatment, skin feels smooth, soft, and rejuvenated.

Who can be treated?

The best candidates for FotoFacial™ treatments are people with rosacea, age spots, or sun damage on their face and neck. Because there is no surgery and no recovery time, FotoFacial treatments are an excellent option for people with busy or active lifestyles.

Laser Treatment for Varices (Varicose Veins)

There are many ways to treat varicose veins, from special stockings to surgery. The latest laser treatments are highly effective and non-invasive.

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of varices can be treated?

Laser treatment can be performed on any part of the body. The procedure is most effective when used on veins less than 3 mm in diameter.

How does the technology work?

The intense pulsed light passes through the skin without causing any damage. The light is absorbed by the hemoglobin (red blood cells) in the veins, causing them to break up and disintegrate. Over the weeks and months following treatment, the broken blood vessels will be absorbed by the body and disappear completely.

How many sessions are necessary?

The treatment of varicose veins is usually completed in one session. Over the years, however, more veins can form, which would require additional treatments to remove.

Is the procedure painful?

The procedure is mildly uncomfortable, producing a sensation similar to the feeling of being pinched or snapped with a rubber band. A topical anesthetic may be applied, but is usually not necessary. A cold compress may be applied after treatment to reduce swelling and discomfort.
